Whatever Lola wants

Rating: 4/5 -  by R.K.

I really liked this movie and in many aspects.

First it showed really well how the western and eastern societies are different. The traditions are well illustrated to be strict in Egypt, which is obviously not the case in New York where Lola comes from. The dialogue between Lola and every single Egyptian character in the movie aims at showing that dissimilarity lays in prejudice and misunderstanding, not in core values.

One of the most remarkable points the director is trying to make is that belly dancing attracts foreigners and is viewed as an art, a passion and a profession, while in the Arab world it is underestimated and is restricted to women dancing in the clubs. So the character of Lola was a message: belly dancing is sensual and beautiful.

In addition, the character of Lola was very cheerful and full of energy as Ismahan says. Her enthusiasm touches the viewer and stays after the movie.

Moreover, the scenes were nicely selected and short. The places where the movie was filmed show how Egypt really is. I think Nabil Ayouch, the director, did very well at describing the environment where the Egyptians live, being the house of Ismahan, that of Zackaria which is too luxurious compared to the many poor areas in Cairo, the hotel, the streets, the markets, the clubs, the location of the wedding, etc…

I would recommend this movie to everyone. It is relaxing, cheerful and informative.
